Guesstimating portions with real-world objects

Typical Portion Control Tips/Guidelines “Deck of cards, Merlin; deck of cards,” my friend Dennis would always say as we sat down to eat ribeyes the size of kittens. That terrific, if ignored, heuristic for estimating the desirable 3-ounce portion of beef came back to me this week with all the interest in the USDA’s mypyramid.gov site and the new dietary guidelines. I’m a big of fan of these kinds of rules of thumb and was pleased to turn up this small collection of real-world portion size guesstimates . Here are a few of my favorites:

I think the whole thumb / ping pong ball / butter thing is that a chunk of butter equivalent to 2 TB is approximately what you'd get if you cut a thumb-length off of your standard stick of butter, which is slightly larger in diameter than your standard ping pong ball. In other words, a block 2cm x 3cm x 3cm (as opposed to a sphere of 3.8 cm diameter) - somebody other than me can do the math. I know, I know, nobody buy me buys grease in stick form anymore. I'll just go back to putting cream cheese on my hockey puck, er, bagel.... » POSTED IN:
