Guesstimating portions with real-world objects

Typical Portion Control Tips/Guidelines “Deck of cards, Merlin; deck of cards,” my friend Dennis would always say as we sat down to eat ribeyes the size of kittens. That terrific, if ignored, heuristic for estimating the desirable 3-ounce portion of beef came back to me this week with all the interest in the USDA’s mypyramid.gov site and the new dietary guidelines. I’m a big of fan of these kinds of rules of thumb and was pleased to turn up this small collection of real-world portion size guesstimates . Here are a few of my favorites:

This new website is precisly why I cannot take the health-priesthood seriously. (I contend that health-nuts would have been religious nuts 50 years ago when churches held the lifestyle sway instead of doctors.) It tells me I'm allowed 6.5 ounces of meat (and beans which are VERY different from meat in many important health terms, I assume it also includes eggs but didn't dig that deeply). So then I said... ok, I'm bad for not being active enough. What about more than 60 minutes of activity? 7.0 ounces of meat. Good Holy Jehosophat! Work my rear off in the gym for over and hour and get 1/2 ounce of meat as a reward? Preposterous. One steak and I'm out of meat for two days. I've never even seen a potato the size of my computer mouse. I'm fat and I'm happy and If I die young I'll still have a lifetime of celebrations of family, friendship and the bountiful gifts of the earth to count my life as worth living. The stoic, stark lifestyles of modern health-monks can go cloister themselves. » POSTED IN:
