re buy two: Way back when my wife and I were newlyweds and poor as dirt, we followed closely the advice of Amy Dacyczyn [1] (of the Tightwad Gazette [2], still an interesting wad of pre-Internet family hacks) and kept a price book. The theory was that you had in one place a list of commonly purchased items and a previous good price. When you see that item at a lower price, you buy a bunch of them. In her case it is about tuna or pasta or toilet paper, but the same rule applies. To some degree, we all do this intuitively: if I saw squared Moleskines at $5 a pop, I'd buy a whole case. The tightwad method is simply more systematic. Viva la Costco! Similarly, my mother recently told me about a woman she heard give a presentation about her system of shopping ONCE A YEAR for all but perishables. It takes her three days (one day finding the best prices by driving to all the stores, the second making the purchases, and the third putting everything away). Her claim is that the peace-of-mind which results is well worth the 72 hour investment. An interesting theory, at least. » POSTED IN:
